A Moment of Rest and Restoration: Tapping into the Body’s Inner Wisdom

14 June 2021 | 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

CYA invites you to treat yourself to a bit of quiet and simply being during this season of reemergence on Monday, June 14th, 6:00 PM.

“A Moment of Rest and Restoration: Tapping into the Body’s Inner Wisdom” is an experiential session on Zoom that will allow Yalies to experience restorative yoga, a practice that focuses on slow, deep stretching and inner connection with the mind, body, and heart. Any body may participate as the practice is incredibly gentle, as any posture can be modified, and as research is now showing that simply lying still and doing the practice in one’s mind is just as beneficial as physically practicing yoga. Following yoga, for those who’d like to share, we’ll hold space as a community (aka, Q&A).

Props: yoga mat, blocks, bolster, blankets. Or any pillows or blankets you have around. The more the better. Bodies will be very gently held and supported by these props.

Liz Foglesong ’07 teaches restorative and yoga nidra lessons internationally. She has training in several holistic healing modalities: polarity, holding space, yoga nidra, CYT-200. She also partly credits these practices with the healing of her own serious health issues. Liz also tutors middle school and high school students in math and science and coaches founders of startups and those leading innovative, change-making movements.

By registering for this event, you relieve CYA and Lessons with Liz LLC of any responsibility for injury.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Register HERE.

Professor Joanna Radin: The History of Biomedical Futures

4 May 2021 | 6:45 pm - 8:00 pm

Meet Joanna Raines, Yale Associate Professor of History of Medicine and History, on Tuesday, May 4th. She was recently featured in a New York Times piece that featured the Yale course, “Covid-19. A History of the Present”: “The course was ‘a pilot project to demonstrate that the humanities are an essential part of what a medical education should be — not just a luxury, but foundational,’ Dr. Radin said. One student wrote her final essay on the practice of Judaism during the pandemic. Another wrote a short story about working as a contact tracer in New Haven.”

In the Zoom meeting format, Professor Radin will address these intriguing questions: How have historical ideas about the future of medicine shaped the present? What happens when imagined futures don’t arrive? What happens when they do? In addition, she will share her experiences teaching the history of science and medicine to Yale undergraduates and medical students during the time of COVID-19.

Professor Radin received her PhD in History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research examines the social and technical conditions of possibility for the systems of biomedicine and biotechnology that we live with today. She has particular interests in global histories of biology, ecology, medicine, technology, and anthropology since 1945; history and anthropology of life and death; biomedical technology and computing; feminist, indigenous, and queer STS; and science fiction.

She is the author of Life on Ice: A History of New Uses for Cold Blood (Chicago 2017), the first history of the low-temperature biobank and co-editor, with Emma Kowal of Cyropolitics: Frozen Life in a Melting World (MIT 2017), which considers the technics and ethics of freezing across the life and environmental sciences. She is also co-editor of the Science as Culture book series for the University of Chicago Press.

This event is also the Colorado Yale Association annual meeting. Professor Radin will join us at 7:00 pm. Colorado Yalies will be admitted at 6:45 pm, so that club business can be conducted. This will be voting on the slate on board members, including president. Zoom registration will have 6:30 pm as the start time, but this is due to their time pull-down not offering quarter-hour increments.

Register HERE. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Direct any questions to Stephanie Grilli: steph@artscribe.net

Feb Club 2021 Goes Virtual

February 2021

With a party somewhere every night, Feb Club started in Yale College as a way to cope with the depths of winter in New Haven. Feb Club Emeritus is for Yalies from all schools and programs to socialize. Colorado holds the record for the most FebClub events in a month, thanks to the efforts of volunteer host throughout the state each year. Last year’s slate was among the very last in-person gatherings CYA has held.

This year, we have scheduled two virtual Zooms for 6:00 pm: Tuesday, February 9th and Saturday, February 20th. No need to get in your car and drive across town or hop on light rail to a local bar or restaurant. Come as you are in the comfort of your own home. While regional quaffs may be missing, connections with Yalies across the state are served up instead.

RSVP to Stephanie Grilli and receive a link before the hour arrives: steph@artscribe.net Even though social-distancing keeps us apart locally, let’s make Colorado still show it knows how to socialize in a big way!

Colorado Black Yale Alumni Social Gathering

15 November 2020 | 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Last November, a number of black alumni had dinner with members of the YAA staff, the evening before Yale Explores. There was discussion of the Coloradans meeting again and possibly developing a chapter of the Yale Black Alumni Association. This is the 50th anniversary of the Yale Afro-American House, and it seems a fitting time to connect at a virtual social gathering. Daphne Butler ’87, JD ’91 will host a Zoom meeting on Sunday, November 15th, starting at 5:00 pm. Email her to RSVP or to express interest if you can’t attend: daphne.e.butler@gmail.com

Check out the podcast Welcome to the (AfAm) House, which “that explores stories from the past, present and future told by the Black people who know them best.”
