CYA Hike: Mount Bierstadt

15 SEPTEMBER 2019

CYA wraps up the summer hike series with the Mount Bierstadt Trail on September 15th.  Just an hour and a half drive from Downtown Denver, this 7-mile-round-trip hike is generally considered among the most accessible 14ers in the state. The trailhead begins at Guanella Pass, and initially the hike takes you through willowed wetlands via a boardwalk to preserve the ecosystem, crossing a small lake and the Scott Gomer Creek. Then the trail starts to ascend, travelling through tundra until it becomes steeper and rockier. The final phase is along a ridge to the summit of Bierstadt with views of surrounding mountains, but you have options as to how much elevation you want to take on. If you’ve been waiting to join the fellow Yalies, here’s your chance!

This is a popular trail. Although it may be less crowded in mid-September, it’s recommended that you opt for carpooling. Sign up by emailing Stephanie Grilli, letting her know where you will connect: steph@artscribe.net. Denver Pickup: 7:30am @ Decatur-Federal Station (2805 W Howard Pl); Golden Pickup: 8:00am @ RTS Park-n-Ride T-Rex Lot (US-40 & Colfax); Boulder Pickup: New Vista High School parking lot @ 7:15am; Trailhead: 9:00am @ Bierstadt Trailhead on Guanella Pass

National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Tour

12 SEPTEMBER 2019 | 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

You may have seen the “stacked boxes” at the foot of the Flatirons and not realized this is a key international research center for the study of our atmosphere and thereby weather and climate. At a time when few went into meteorology, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) was established in Boulder in 1960 to enable interdisciplinary research on a scale commensurate with the scale of the subject. Dedicated in 1967, its iconic building complex known as Mesa Labs was designed by I.M.Pei, inspired by the Anasazi cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde with the intention of “joining” with nature. Now in the 21st-century, NCAR figures prominently in gathering and interpreting data through ever more sophisticated tools, which is adding to our understanding of global phenomenon.

Science that pushes humans’ understanding of the world they live in, and the ever-changing dynamics of the atmosphere that influences the way they live — and will continue to survive on the planet — is what has been happening there.

On Thursday, September 12th, Colorado Yalies are scheduled for a private tour of the facilities starting at 3:30 pm. The event is free, but you must RSVP to Stephanie Grilli, because there is a cap: steph@artscribe.net. Even though this is during regular working hours, there should be a lot of interest among both specialists and generally curious alums. The tour marks CYA’s lead-up to Yale Explores,  with the focus on data on October 18th. Thanks to Jennifer Phillips ’95 MA ’01 PhD for facilitating.

The tour is full. Email Stephanie to get on the wait list.

Author Anne Gardiner Perkins ’81 Comes to Colorado

5, 6 SEPTEMBER 2019

First female editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News, Anne Gardiner Perkins ’81 chronicles the introduction of undergraduate coed education at Yale in her recently published book, Yale Needs Women. Her account based in five years of archival research tells the behind-the-scenes administration story that challenges a “sanitized tale of equity instantly achieved” and includes narratives of those who matriculated in 1969 while outnumbered seven to one. Anne’s arrival in Colorado coincidentally coincides with the year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of coeducation in Yale College and the 150th anniversary of women students at Yale.

The experience the first undergraduate women found when they stepped onto Yale’s imposing campus was not the same one their male peers enjoyed. Isolated from one another, singled out as oddities and sexual objects, and barred from many of the privileges an elite education was supposed to offer, many of the first girls found themselves immersed in an overwhelmingly male culture they were unprepared to face.

Anne kicks off her book tour in Colorado at the Bookworm, 295 Main Street Edwards, with a panel, which includes local alums Sally Austen ’74, Sandra Fuller ’73, and Kent Petrie ’72, starting at 6:00 PM (admission $10). After the book signing, Yalie attendees can meet with Anne at Sally’s nearby boutique and have a glass of wine. For questions about the book event, contact the Bookworm. Please RSVP to Sally, so that she knows how many to expect: austen4her@gmail.com. The follow day, Friday, September 6th, Anne will be at the Tattered Cover in LoDo, 1628 16th Street, Denver, for a book talk and signing starting at 7:00 pm. [If you can’t attend, you can still purchase a signed copy of the book on the Tattered Cover website] After the event,  interested Yalie attendees go across the street to the nearby Thirsty Lion to meet Anne, have a drink and/or a bite to eat (run your own tab) Please help planning by RSVPing to Stephanie Grilli, letting her know if you’ll join the group after the Tattered Cover: steph@artscribe.net. Let’s give Anne a Colorado welcome!

Camp Yale Emeritus: BOLD Old Town Fort Collins Meet-up!

28 AUGUST 2019 ] 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Calling all NoCo Yale alumni – especially Bulldogs of the Last Decade! Come down to Old Town for our first Fort Collins Camp Yale event, which is hosted by Brandon Morgan ’16. Enjoy some great local German-style brews at Prost Brewing Co. and Biergarten, 321 Old Firehouse Alley, and meet fellow alums on Wednesday, August, 28th, starting at 5:30 pm and going til all Yalies leave. Fort Collins’ more than 20 breweries produce 70% of Colorado’s craft beer and 7% of the nation’s — rightly earning it the designation as Colorado’s craft-beer capital. All Colorado Yalies are invited, and those whose graduation date is in the last ten years get their first round free.

Camp Yale Emeritus is the summertime version of FebClub. So no speeches, no fundraising, just a party. Please let Brandon know if you are coming, so that he can arrange adequate seating: brandon.morgan01@gmail.com. If you’re interested in carpooling from Denver, contact Stephanie Grilli: steph@artscribe.net.
