Justin Farrell is associate professor of sociology at Yale University in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He is the author of The Battle for Yellowstone: Morality and the Sacred Roots of Environmental Conflict and Billionaire Wilderness: The Ultra-Wealthy and the Remaking of the American West. A Wyoming native, Farrell applies an interdisciplinary approach to his research that asks questions of environment, politics, human culture, and policy, and he oversees Farrell Lab: Yale North American West Initiative, which through immersive field courses, field research, and student fellowships draws together a wide range of social scientists, natural scientists, and practitioners. He is part of the Rural West Covid Project and published a New York Times opinion piece about the wealthy riding out the pandemic in Jackson Hole.
I literally watched over many years this community be transformed into the richest and most unequal community in the nation. Over time I gained a sense that extreme wealth would be the defining factor shaping the West and its environs, now and into the future.
CYA is hosting an in-person gathering with Professor Farrell at an alumni home at the base of the foothills south of 285 on Monday July 19th starting at 7:00 pm. He will give a brief overview of his book and other research he has going on at Yale, and then he will open it up for Q&A. Weather permitting, we will be outdoors with the house interior also available. Casual-dining food along with beer and wine. Those who might want to hike before the event can access South Valley Park and Cathy Johnson Trail (less than 2 miles away or Deer Creek Canyon Park (a little over 4 miles).
Professor Farrell’s work should be of interest to many Colorado Yalies, and the location in which we can experience the drama of the setting sun should make the night magical, as we savor the experience of being together in-person again.
