You may have seen the story on various Yale Alumni Association media posts (front page of the YAA website) about Yale College Class of ’92 climbing Mount Yale this July on various Yale Alumni Association media posts. What you may not know is that expedition’s organizer Dave Belin was one of four Colorado Yalies who volunteered for the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative’s multi-day, trail-maintenance project the week before. Along with Dave, Charlie Peck ’69, Victor Padilla ’81, and Joe Stepanek ’65 helped the CFI with rock work below the summit ridge, one of the organization’s most difficult endeavors at high altitude on heavy reconstruction. With early afternoon lightning a danger, these hale and hearty alumni had to be on the trail at 5:30 am, but reports are that the early wakeup call was worth it.

Dave will share his experiences at a Zoom event on Monday, September 27th, at 6:00 pm. Charlie Peck promises to be there too. He documented his days with photographs, and it should be both entertaining and informational. Word comes from the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative that they hope to have a similar multi-day project in 2020: “to help with timber structures below treeline and also help with rock work up high.” You may be inspired to participate next year.
